Hi people, this is my first post at the forum, I wanted to show you my work, its a Yamaha Jog scooter engine, the spool its made from the wheel itself, the frame is just square tubing i found over there... the rope guide is made from scrath using 4 engine pistons as rollers and some iron cutoff i had laying around Very Happy... throttle control is provided by a BMX brake lever attached to the frame, no brake installed yet but if i need it i can install it in less than 15 minutes...
Fuel tank is a water reservoir from a FIAT Uno water coolant circuit, Air filter is made from plumbing tubing and the element is made from foam (it came into a video card box)
Painted Candy Pink and Baby BLUE... no comments Very Happy

Im waiting for 750 feet of 5mm tandem paraglider tow rope... Im from Argentina and thats the best rope i could get... so, i hope it works... ill make a video ASAP

Tell me what you think Very Happy

BTW... As its a scooter engine and transmission... it has an integrated centrifugalcluthc...so unspooling is super easy.... it automatically disengages when the engine is at idle... and the rope unrolls freely...
The power converter works great, it sets to full torque when the spool is stopped and the ngradually incresases speed...

Badass!! I like the "suspended" set up you have. Looks like the engine is just chillin there.

Looks perfect !

Thanks to this topic I bought today a scooterengine also.

I also have an electric motor 6,5 Kw 44,4 volt Li-po batteries. I hope this will work, I'll start a new topic for this project.
Untill then I'm still very curious about the result of the topic starter !!

Please let us hear from you soon ! Laughing

I gotta see photos/video! Great idea! If only my golf cart gear ratio was higher....

Hi everyone.
I've been wanting to build my own winch for a while now and then I came across this idea with a scooter engine and it just seemed too good to be true. I have an old scooter (PGO Super 50) which i bought second hand years ago. Do you guys think it would work with that engine?
Thanks in advance

I've made a winch with a 50cc 2-stroke engine. It didn't work. A 100cc engine did the job.
The problems I encountered were:
- the minimum diameter of the reel was limited by the diameter of the drum brake. ( you want to have a brake on your winch ) , and that was too large to pull a 90kg guy out of the water. A jumpstart was possible ( http://clubdt.ma.cx/movies/scooter-winch-test-run-1-june-2009 )
- even using the 100cc engine & the standard rim we weren't able to get a deep water start ( http://clubdt.ma.cx/movies/winch-testrun-2-100cc-yamaha-aerox )
- finally , decreasing the reel diameter got us a good working winch + deep water starts ( http://clubdt.ma.cx/movies/winch-testrun-4-100cc-yamaha-aerox )

Hope this helps a little - I really would like to see the 50cc winch above work... Certainly with the large rim diameter...

Hello,
I've followed your work without being registered but now that I'm about to start my build, it's about time to get registered. I will use a 250 cc engine packing 20 hp (it's a bit over the top, I know Rolling Eyes) that is water cooled. I can't tell if you guys in this thread have air or water cooled engines. If you have water - how have you solved the coolant flow with expansion tank? There, that was the questions. Now over to some tips:

I noticed that you have struggled with spool-sizes preventing you from getting enough power from the winch. Have you considered changing weights on the variomatic and also adding a restriction bushing so the variomatic can't gear up too much? I have been fiddling a lot with a 50 cc-scooter that I drive to work on sunny days and you can do so much just by changing weights. Just by changing from 5g weights to 4.5g, it was like driving a new scooter.

What we will do on the 250 cc-winch is to put on very light weights so the engine won't start reeling in until it's properly revved up. Also, we will add a restriction so you don't have the vario gearing up to the ratio used when going full on the road (going 90 mph on the water sorta sucks).

Right now we have to figure out how to put all the electrical engine-components together without having the wiring harness. Not the funnies of challenges but one of the suckiest =)

To be continued...

Here are some more tips :

The problem was not in the variomatic, but the automatic clutch that kept slipping on these low speeds. It needs a lot of torque to pull the wakeboarder out of the water, and apparently the speed of the spool ( rim ) was too low to make it go to full grip...
So if you would want to make adjustments, I would suggest to start with adjusting the weights of the clutch.

It has already been mentioned on this forum, but this setup allows really easy unwinding of the rope. No resistance at all. A comparable regular winch + chain has much more friction to unroll.

250cc should give you more than enough power.

My engine is air-cooled. Maybe you can just toss one end of a hose in your lake or pool to have the engine cooled ... No need for a radiator...

I also notice that it's more difficult to keep a 2-stroke engine ( like mine ) on a constant RPM. A 4-stroke engine just starts pounding away without really revving up to high RPM's.

Well, anyway - happy building, I hope to see some pics/video's once it's ready Smile

Here's another video of a winch-test we did last weekend ( water temp was 5 degrees Celsius ) http://clubdt.ma.cx/movies/jens-winch-testing-lommel
